Exemplar Health wins SCUH bid

The LNP Government today announced Exemplar Health has won the right to design, build, finance and maintain the major new tertiary teaching Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH).
Premier Campbell Newman signed the historic public-private partnership arrangement at Nambour Hospital, with Health Minister Lawrence Springborg.
He said the consortium included Lend Lease, Spotless Group, Capella Capital and Siemens, and would build then maintain the hospital for 25 years.
“When its doors open in 2016, SCUH will become the first major new, not replacement, hospital built in Australia for more than 20 years,” Mr Newman said.
“Labor ignored health in Queensland for almost as long, but we recognise the impact of growth on the Sunshine Coast and are committed to getting these services right.”
The Sunshine Coast University Hospital was first promised by the Labor Government more than 10 years ago. In 2007, Anna Bligh said construction on the Sunshine Coast University Hospital would begin in 2010 but not a single brick has been laid.
Mr Newman said the LNP was fulfilling its election commitment to deliver the Sunshine Coast University Hospital as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) – Queensland’s first hospital PPP project.
“We are getting on with building the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, without delay,” Mr Newman said.
“This institution will be the centrepiece of a Kawana Health Campus with a co-located private hospital, parking for 3,500 cars and a Skills, Academic and Research Centre.
“Construction is one of Queensland’s four pillars and projects like this demonstrate that we are working to get the State back on track.”
SCUH will open in 2016 with 450 beds and 2,500 new staff, expanding to 738 beds and 5,000 staff by 2021. It will bring complex specialist services to the Sunshine Coast, ensuring about 10,000 residents no longer need to travel to Brisbane for treatment each year.
Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said a panel of clinicians and infrastructure specialists identified Exemplar Health as the best value for money from a shortlist of three bids.
“Exemplar Health has a very strong track record and is currently completing the Gold Coast University Hospital,” Mr Springborg said.
“Its bid represents significant value for money and delivers substantial savings for Queensland taxpayers.
“Today’s contract signing is ahead of schedule, allowing more time for the design and planning stages of the project, with works expected on site about October.”
Exemplar estimates about 1,800-2,000 jobs will be created during the peak of construction activity.
SCUH will offer a range of new and expanded health care services including a new comprehensive cancer centre, a range of complex surgical services including neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, maxillofacial surgery and a trauma service.
The Skills, Academic and Research Centre will train staff and students with the aim of making locals the workforce of the future.
The Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, operated by Ramsay Health Care, is a 200-bed private hospital co-located on the SCUH site opening in December 2013, which will offer choice to patients and medical professionals.
