Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing
The Honourable Steve Dickson
Flood and storm damaged sporting clubs across Queensland are getting back to business thanks to a $2.1 million Newman Government funding boost, Sport and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson said today.
Mr Dickson said many clubs were still struggling to rebuild after wild weather earlier in the year and this assistance would aid the recovery of 110 community sport and recreation organisations.
“Queensland has seen more than its share of natural disasters recently and although the first focus is to help those whose homes and businesses have been affected, it’s also important to recognise vital community organisations,” Mr Dickson said.
“The Newman Government is committed to supporting our sporting communities at a grass roots level and this disaster recovery funding is just one way we’re making sure Queenslanders can take part in active, healthy lifestyles.”
Mr Dickson said the Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program provided grants of up to $25,000 to go toward replacing equipment and facilities destroyed by natural disasters.
“The funding will go a long way towards helping these clubs rebuild, including replacing equipment and repairing fields, fences, tennis courts, horse jumps and drainage systems,” he said.
“The Newman Government is serious about providing better sporting equipment and facilities, so more Queenslanders can get involved in sport and recreation clubs, particularly underprivileged kids.
“That’s why we’ve created the $16 million Get in the Game program, to give young Queenslanders who need it most an opportunity to get involved in local sporting clubs.
“Our grass roots focus could also inspire some of our future sporting stars. Students as young as 10 years old going to school today will be eligible to compete at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.”
Mr Dickson said each of the 110 sport and recreation clubs from disaster declared areas across Queensland, including Gympie, the Sunshine Coast, Townsville and St George would receive their funding grants in coming weeks.
