The Honourable Jann Stuckey

Regional events across the State have received a $1.4 million boost under the latest round of the Events Queensland Regional Development Program (EQRDP).

Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Jann Stuckey said the latest funding round would support 58 Queensland events - from cultural celebrations to triathlons, music festivals, water sports, and food and wine festivals.

“The Newman Government recognises the important role events play in attracting visitors to regional areas, which in turn provides social and economic benefits for local communities,” Ms Stuckey said today.

“We’re pleased to support a range of important events in regional Queensland as part of our goal to double the annual overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion by 2020.”

Events Queensland has created the most comprehensive portfolio of supported events of any state in Australia with more than $21 million invested through the EQRDP across 976 events since 2001.

Events Queensland interim CEO, Kirsten Herring, said strong regional support was crucial to the ongoing success of the EQRDP.

“These events are delivered in partnership with local communities and that collaborative effort is vital to their success,” Ms Herring said.

“This program, with the support of bodies including Regional Tourism Organisations, helps deliver tourism benefits and promote regional destinations to a wider audience.”

The next EQRDP funding round closes 15 February 2013 for events held between 1 October 2013 and 31 March 2015.
