Disability services pilot to break the language barrier: Minister
Communities and Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has today announced a statewide language service will be piloted by the Bligh Government to help break down communication barriers experienced by people with a disability.
“I am pleased the new Interpreting and Translating Assistance Strategy will be piloted by the Bligh Government to provide greater support for Queenslanders with a disability who have culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and needs,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“This is exciting initiative is about planning for the future and it’s the next step in ensuring all Queenslanders with a disability have equitable access to the support they need,” she said.
“The pilot will assist DSQ funded non-government services in a number of ways, from helping them generate easily understood information for their clients, as well as enabling them to tailor their supports to cater for individuals’ language needs.
“In particular, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders, South Sea Islanders and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds will be among the first to benefit from this program.
“It will also help people who are deaf or who have a vision impairment.”
Disability Services Queensland has committed $600,000 in funding for the two-year pilot to develop and deliver the Interpreting and Translating Assistance Strategy.
“As part of the project, the successful tenderer will also be gathering detailed information about issues surrounding the provision of language services to people with a disability to give us an even greater understanding for the ongoing development of supports and services,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“This information will help determine the future direction of interpreting and translating services to ensure those who need the most help are receiving it.
“I look forward to announcing the successful non-government organisation who will be leading this project later this year.”
