Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Winton receives $2.3 million in disaster funding
Winton Shire Council will receive a grant of $2,335,000 towards restoration works to roads damaged by flooding in January and February this year.
Local Government Minister Warren Pitt announced details of the grant today under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements program.
“Winton Shire covers an area of more than 53,000 square kilometres in western Queensland and parts of the shire were significantly affected by storms and flooding earlier in the year,” Mr Pitt said.
“The repair costs were beyond the council’s capabilities, which is why the State and Commonwealth governments have stepped in to help out.”
“Numerous local roads across the region were affected, with the worst hit including Cork Mackunda Road, Mayneside Jundah Road, Nuken Access Road and Whyrallah Tulmar road,” Mr Pitt said.
“In regional communities, road systems are a community lifeline, so it was important that these repair works took place as quickly as possible so residents could go about their daily lives.”
“Winton Shire Council has also contributed $50,000 towards the repair works.”
Mr Pitt said the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) program was a joint State and Commonwealth government initiative.
The NDRRA program enables local councils to restore damage to non-insured essential public assets as a result of a natural disaster event.
