POLICE RESIDENCE PLANNED FOR WEIPA OFFICERS

Accommodation shortages will soon be a thing of the past for police officers posted to work in Weipa.

Police Minister Judy Spence has announced land has been purchased to build a new police residence in the township.

“Police expect to spend a total of $470,000 to buy Lot 116 Kanthin Road in Weipa, and to construct a three-bedroom house,” Ms Spence said.

“This residence will go a long way towards alleviating the shortage of suitable accommodation in Weipa.

“This has been exacerbated by an expansion in mining operations in Weipa, which has seen the resumption of 20 houses currently leased to state government departments.”

The Member for Cook, Jason O’Brien, said the new housing followed the construction of two new duplexes in Weipa over the past two years for police officers.

“By giving our police comfortable accommodation, it helps ensure Queensland communities – particularly those in rural and remote areas – are kept safe and secure by a local police presence,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The Beattie Government is committed to ensuring Queensland’s police have the best possible infrastructure, resources and support to work with the community in fighting crime.

“I am pleased that this extra funding will help achieve more comfortable housing for police.”
