The rejuvenation of Redlands’ IndigiScapes Environmental Education and Visitor Centre is almost complete with the official opening of a raft of improvements jointly funded by the Palaszczuk Government.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said upgrades and improvements to the café, entry area, interpretative centre and public amenities meant a better visitor experience for everybody.

“This project, funded with $916,137 from the 2017-19 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP) and $682,609 from Redland Shire Council, has supported an estimated 17 jobs,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“The project opening is well timed, coinciding to the day with the centre’s 20th anniversary.”

Member for Redlands Kim Richards said since IndigiScapes opened in 2000, the 14.5 hectare site had evolved into a leading centre of environmental learning.

“Up to 50,000 visitors each year enjoy a family-friendly setting enhanced with picnic areas, playgrounds, accessible walking tracks and free barbecues,” she said.

“The café and gift shop provide fresh produce with a unique bush tucker twist, and the bush tucker experience will only be improved in the new expanded café.”

Member for Capalaba Don Brown said an earlier 2016-17 round of LGGSP provided $109,800 to expand the centre’s native plant nursery.

“IndigiScapes has long been much more than a visitor attraction for the Redlands,” he said.

“It is a community hub for volunteer community groups, including the Redlands Coast Community Bushcare Program, which works to restore Redlands conservation areas.”

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams thanked the State Government for its significant funding contributions to the centre.

“IndigiScapes is among the most unique environment centres in Queensland, and we now look forward to opening its doors to the Redlands Coast community and visitors,” she said.

The 2017-19 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP) budget totals $60 million, delivered over two financial years, supporting local governments meeting the needs of their community by funding priority capital infrastructure projects.

Across three rounds of LGGSP, including the current one that runs to 2021, Redland City Council has been approved funding of $4,044,484 to help deliver five projects.
