Minister for Police and Minister for Corrective Services, the Honourable Mark Ryan MP and Commissioner Katarina Carroll have welcomed 71 new officers to the Queensland Police Service (QPS) following a graduation ceremony at the Academy in Oxley today.

The ceremony marked the end of a six-month period of intensive training to ultimately prepare the now First Year Constables (FYC) for their new roles as general duties police officers throughout the state.

Today’s graduates range from 19 to 45 years of age and come from a diverse range of careers and cultural backgrounds.

The new FYCs have spent months building a strong foundation to enable them to deliver an excellent level of service as they begin their careers in the QPS.

Prior to commencing at the Academy, today’s graduates were the first cohort of recruits to undertake a four-week Recruit Distance Based Pre-Learning Pathway, designed to prepare recruits for the challenges of the Recruit Training Program and to succeed in their chosen policing career within the QPS.

Commissioner Carroll said the 71 officers who marched through the ceremonial gates were different in many ways to the fresh-faced recruits who entered the academy six-months ago.

“Each of the FYCs have changed as a result of their training, their environment and the leadership demonstrated by staff here at the Academy,” Commissioner Carroll said.

“As First Year Constables of the Queensland Police Service, they are now charged with the duty of ensuring the safety and security of the people of Queensland.

“I am filled with pride and have confidence in the future of the Queensland Police Service.  You now add to our rich history, to our diversity and are now ready to protect the peace and good order for the people of Queensland.”

Minister Ryan congratulated the new police officers and wished them well in their first year as sworn officers.

“Each has a very important role being responsible for the safety and security of the people of Queensland,” Minister Ryan said.

“I wish you the best of luck in your policing career and am confident that you will do your part in upholding the high standard of service.

“On behalf of the Queensland Government, I am grateful to the 71 officers who have accepted this responsibility today.”
