Crafty crabbing crew caught in the spotlight

A father and son have been fined $3500 each after being caught with two dozen illegally-caught crabs at Cabbage Tree Point.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the pair were found with 18 undersized male crabs and four female mud crabs.

“They were also in possession of half a dozen crab pots with no identifying information on them,” Mr Furner said.

“Their use of a bright spotlight gave them away.”

“This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and that is why we have employed 20 extra Fisheries officers and strengthened their powers to act.

“This will help us to build a legacy of a sustainable fishery for our children and grandchildren.”

The pair pleaded guilty in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court.

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officer Neil Pye said the successful court prosecution was a reminder to all fishers that taking under-sized crabs and using non-compliant gear would not be tolerated.

“You will be caught and you will go to court,” Mr Pye said.

“QBFP uses a range of techniques and technology to uncover illegal activities, including surveillance cameras.”
