North Queensland country club and equestrian centre jumps another hurdle

The proposed North Queensland Country Club Resort and Equestrian Centre near Townsville has cleared another hurdle with the Queensland Government releasing the draft terms of reference for the project’s environmental impact statement (EIS).

Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the release of the draft terms of reference for public comment is an important milestone for the project.

“The proposed country club will provide luxury accommodation buildings, retailing, conference and function facilities, restaurants and a world-class equestrian centre opening on to Halifax Bay.

“If successful, the project will support 300 full-time jobs during construction, and the proponent, Landmark Projects, has estimated the project could inject more than $360 million of tourism spending each year in the Townsville region when fully operational.”

Mr Dick said the public are invited to have their say on the draft terms of reference until 12 July 2019.

“Public comment is important, as it helps shape the final terms of reference, which ensures potential impacts on the natural, social and economic environment are appropriately considered,” he said.

“When finalised, the terms of reference will set out the matters the proponent must address when preparing the EIS for the project.

“Once the draft EIS is completed to the satisfaction of Queensland’s independent Coordinator-General, the community will then be invited to comment and have their say on the project.”

Construction of the project is expected to commence in 2022, subject to securing necessary approvals.
