The Mooloolaba Spit Boardwalk Renewal project is forging ahead, with the upgraded boardwalk already open for business thanks to $920,000 from the State Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP).

Inspecting the works, Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the community was already seeing the benefits of the upgrades.

“The old boardwalk was built more than 20 years ago and, because it was so popular and heavily used by visitors and residents, was badly in need of replacement,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“It’s fantastic to see so many people out and enjoying the new, wider facility, getting fresh air and exercise in one of the most beautiful locations in the world.

“Sunshine Coast Regional Council must be congratulated on the work they’ve already finished here and once all aspects of the project are completed, this will truly be a wonderful piece of recreational infrastructure.

“It’s really a great example of what can be achieved when our two levels of government work together.”

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the two-stage, $2.3 million boardwalk renewal project would cater for more users enjoying the great outdoor environment at Mooloolaba.

“Having a wider boardwalk means even more locals and visitors can enjoy it any time of the day,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“This upgrade is one of many Mooloolaba infrastructure projects council is investing in to create a world-class destination for our residents and visitors to enjoy.

“It is clear our community loves the new boardwalk and how it supports the healthy lifestyle on the Sunshine Coast.

“Not only has it been popular with people walking and running at all times of the day, it is also council’s most popular Instagram post, having received a lot of commendation across social media.”

The second stage of the project, which involves upgrading the pathway to provide safer pedestrian access from the Mooloolaba Surf Club, will begin in July.

The LGGSP is designed to deliver priority projects that maintain and extend the functional life of infrastructure assets; contribute to safe, connected and liveable communities; support economic growth and innovation; and support communities to be more resilient to natural disasters and reduce future expenditure on asset restoration.
