Palaszczuk Government kicks in for new Legends clubhouse

The Gold Coast’s largest soccer club for adult players will celebrate the opening of its new clubhouse this weekend (2 February 2019) with a pre-season party and open day to which everyone is welcome.

Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon said the Palaszczuk Government was proud to have contributed $100,000 towards the Legends Gold Coast multi-purpose facility.

“With around 530 members and 42 teams, Legends is one of the largest soccer clubs in the southern hemisphere,” Ms Scanlon said.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s contribution was funded through the Get Playing Places and Spaces initiative and complements support from Gold Coast City Council and that of dedicated club members,” she said.

“This new clubhouse will be used for presentations and club activities and to provide first class facilities to help Legends grow their membership even further.”

Legends Football Gold Coast president Anthony Farr said members were ‘over the moon’ with the new clubhouse.

“It was a long journey but, thanks to the government and the council, and especially our members, we’ve got a clubhouse of which we can be really proud,” he said.

“Our members play in over-35, 45, and 55 leagues and range in age from their mid-30s through to their 70s.

“As well as giving our members the opportunity to keep playing football, with all the health benefits the game brings, our club also provides valuable social opportunities which really helps the mental wellbeing of our players.

“The new clubhouse will enhance these opportunities, providing a great location for our members to escape life’s pressures and socialise with like-minded people.”

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said the Palaszczuk Labor Government valued the importance of Queensland’s grassroots sporting clubs in connecting the community and promoting healthy lifestyles.

“My message to Gold Coasters is that it doesn’t matter whether you’re in the form of your life, or if you’ve passed your peak or you’re having a go for the first time, we’ll do everything we can to help you keep strapping on your boots no matter how old you get,” he said.

“The Gold Coast has been on a winning streak thanks to our government with $11.5 million spent on local clubs and $320 million invested in sports infrastructure through the Commonwealth Games, and now another round of great news with the opening of the Legends clubhouse at Labrador.

“There’s a lot to be said for supporting mature-aged sport as it has an unsurpassed power to keep all of us engaged in our community, connected and focussed on what really matters: friends and family.”

The official opening of the Legends Football Clubhouse will be held on Saturday, 2 February at Keith Hunt Park, Musgrave Ave, Labrador.

The club will also play a special memorial match in honour of the late Mark Kingsman, a former president and former Managing Director of Brisbane Roar, who recently passed away.
