Stop Order issued on Broadway Hotel

To ensure the protection of the Broadway Hotel in Woolloongabba, Minister for Environment Leeanne Enoch has issued a Stop Order under section 154 of the Queensland Heritage Act 1992.

The Government has taken this measure, following advice, to pre-empt any move to demolish the Broadway Hotel, which is an important part of Brisbane’s history.

“As the Minister responsible for heritage, it is my role to ensure important heritage places are protected,” Ms Enoch said.

“The hotel is an important part of our city’s story and has been on the Queensland Heritage Register since 1992.”

Deputy Premier and Member for South Brisbane Jackie Trad said the preservation of the Broadway Hotel was important to the community, and for Queensland.

“The community is sick of seeing our heritage buildings destroyed,” she said.

“We have listened and the Government is taking action.

“Now, I’m calling on Brisbane City Council to not approve any development on this site that doesn’t include the restoration and preservation of the Broadway Hotel.”

The Department of Environment and Science has written to the owner to advise them of his responsibilities regarding the safety and preservation of the site.

The Stop Order will not prevent the owner from carrying out the necessary action to prevent any further deterioration and ensure the safety of the site.

Minister Enoch will now write to Brisbane Mayor Graham Quirk to request that Brisbane City Council issue an enforcement notice under section 248 of the Building Act 1975 to ensure the owner takes the necessary action to stabilise the structure of the Broadway Hotel and ensure the preservation of the building.
