Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has described the Brisbane Broncos NRLW Premiership victory ‘an historic achievement’ at a celebration event in Brisbane today.

The Broncos squad was presented with the keys to the city by Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk following their 34-12 victory over the Sydney Roosters in the inaugural NRLW Grand Final in Sydney on Sunday.

“110 years after rugby league became a professional sport in Australia, we are closer than ever before to a level playing field,” the Premier said.

“This team is not only the first ever National Rugby League Women’s Premiership champions, but they’re champions in the eyes of every young girl who dares to dream of playing professional rugby league one day.

“This has been an incredible journey to watch and I’ve proudly cheered from the sidelines the whole way.

“I want to congratulate the team, the coaching staff and everyone behind the scenes who have not only created magical moments in sport but also made sporting history.”

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni, who was also at the presentation, said it’s a great boost for women’s rugby league throughout Queensland.

“The Brisbane Broncos women’s team has been helping to progress the sport with junior skills clinics at clubs and schools, and also contributing to the Beyond the Broncos Indigenous programs,” Mr de Brenni said.

“Female participation at Queensland clubs has increased by 24 per cent in 2018, with more than 5700 players registered with teams.

“The Palaszczuk Government is a proud supporter of rugby league, allocating more than $10 million since 2015 to support our teams and develop the sport.

“We’re also encouraging greater female participation in sport and recreation through our $15 million Female Facilities program to improve sports amenities, and our Get Out, Get Active initiative.

“The Brisbane Broncos are the inaugural NRLW champions, and it’s something we can all celebrate.”
