Thriving Murgon community to benefit from new neighbourhood centre

Residents in Murgon will benefit from better access to services and support in their community, with the Palaszczuk Government investing $3.1 million into the construction and establishment of a new neighbourhood centre.

During a visit to the region this week, Minister for Communities Coralee O’Rourke inspected the site of the new centre at 21 Taylor St East, with site works expected to begin in the next week.

“Murgon’s current neighbourhood centre, Graham House Community Centre, has been servicing the community for 30 years,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“The current centre has limited space and does not have adequate disability access for clients and amenities to service staff and clients, so it’s time for this community to get a bigger and better facility.

“That’s why the Palaszczuk Government has committed $3.1 million for the construction of this new neighbourhood centre for the Graham House Community Centre, in addition to the $118,409 we provide each year to operate the centre.

“This investment from Palaszczuk Government will allow the new neighbourhood centre to provide much needed services, support, referrals and information for vulnerable people in the region.”

The new neighbourhood centre is due for completion in April 2019.

The Palaszczuk Government currently funds 124 neighbourhood and community centres across the state.

Mrs O’Rourke said neighbourhood centres formed the fundamental base of social services infrastructure in Queensland, acting as hubs to respond to the diverse needs of vulnerable Queenslanders.

“Neighbourhood centres operate in a localised way to respond to a range of issues and opportunities,” she said.

“They have the capacity, flexibility and responsiveness to shift priorities and resources as new needs emerge.

“I am proud of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to neighbourhood centres, which are part of our plan to create thriving communities where vulnerable Queenslanders are resilient, able to participate in their communities and enjoy social and economic wellbeing.”
