Queensland writers honoured at Literary Awards

Arts Minister Ros Bates has congratulated the winners of the inaugural Queensland Literary Awards, named at the State Library last night.

Minister Bates says the awards recognise distinguished literary achievement and excellence from writers across Australia.

“Out of the 15 awards, Queenslanders were honoured in five categories and two of the winners are currently living in our great state,” Ms Bates said.

“It is good to see the awards have been able to be held without direct government funding.

“The Newman Government is supporting the awards through our significant financial support of the Brisbane Writers Festival, and we look forward to considering direct financial support when the state’s dire financial situation improves.

“I’m also hoping to see more Queenslanders honoured in future years.”
