O’Connell the new Central Queensland Coroner

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Jarrod Bleijie has announced the appointment of Mr David O’Connell as a Magistrate at the Mackay Courthouse, where he will be the new Coroner for Central Queensland.

Mr Bleijie said the appointment had been approved by Her Excellency the Governor and would help to provide vital justice services to the region.

“I am pleased to welcome Mr O’Connell who has a great deal of experience in various areas of the law, including specialised work within the Coroners Court,” he said.

“Magistrate O’Connell was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1991, the High Court of Australia in 1994 and most recently was partner at Mackay law firm Macrossan & Amiet.

“He has practised in a number of areas of law, including business and property, litigation, wills and estates and been involved with specialised work in the Industrial and Coroners courts.

“The appointment of a full-time coroner in Mackay will free up regional magistrates allowing them to deal with existing court backlogs.

“The current waiting times simply aren’t good enough and the addition of a Central Queensland coroner will help to improve efficiency in the regional court system.

“The Government also recently announced it will be appointing three permanent magistrates, which means Queensland will have more full-time magistrates sitting on a daily basis.

“Together, these four additional appointments will give the court the resources and support it needs to get on with the job.

“I would like to congratulate Mr O’Connell and wish him all the best for the next stage of his career.”

The appointment will take effect from 13 August 2012.
