Extra respite support for disability carers

Queensland families and carers of adults with a disability will have access to additional respite services for short breaks thanks to $4.8 million in funding from the Newman Government.

Disability Services Minister Tracy Davis said local organisations across the state would use the funds over the next three years to give carers of adults with a disability a break from their duties.

“Caring for a family member with a disability can be a full-time job that can place extra stress on everyone involved,” Ms Davis said.

“Carers deserve a break to replenish their energy and do other things and this funding gives them a chance to do this.”

Ms Davis said eight organisations across Queensland would receive funding to provide additional flexible respite services to people with a disability, while their carers enjoy some well-deserved time out.

“It’s thanks to the great work of our community partners that more people with a disability and their carers are receiving the extra support they need,” she said.

“Carers of people with a disability make an amazing contribution to our communities and by funding these respite support services we are helping families stay together and maintain long-term, in home, caring relationships.”

The eight organisations to receive funding are:

    • ARC Disability Services, Cairns
    • Bowen Flexi Care, Bowen
    • Gladstone Community Linking, Gladstone
    • Burnett Respite Services, Bundaberg
    • Baptist Union of Queensland, Toogoolawah and South West Queensland
    • Lifestyle Solutions Australia, Redlands and Logan
    • Interact Australia, Brisbane
    • SCOPE, Morayfield, Pine Rivers, Kallangur and Murrumba
