    Gold Coast Waterways Authority underway

The LNP Government today fulfilled another election commitment by announcing former Gold Coast Mayor Gary Baildon as the chair-designate of the new Gold Coast Waterways Authority (GCWA).

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Scott Emerson congratulated Mr Baildon on his appointment and looked forward to working with him to deliver positive outcomes for Gold Coast Waterways.

“Under the former Labor Government, marine infrastructure on the Gold Coast was completely ignored with no clear direction or long term strategy,” Mr Emerson said.

“Our commitment to establish a new GCWA will return control of one of the Gold Coast’s most important assets back to locals themselves.

“The Authority will be responsible for deciding on the best use of the $30 million committed to the Gold Coast from the LNP’s Marine Infrastructure Fund to help restore the Broadwater as a hub of recreational and tourist activity.

“Under the direction of Mr Baildon and through the re-establishment of the Authority, the Gold Coast Broadwater and nearby Waterways will no longer be neglected.”

Mr Baildon was the Gold Coast Mayor for eight years and served as the Deputy Mayor of the Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise Councillor for six years.

“He has been widely involved in the local community and really understands the needs of the area, having served as a member of the Gold Coast City Council water, beaches and foreshores committee for a number of years,” Mr Emerson said.

Mr Baildon said he was excited to take on the role of chair-designate and was committed to properly managing the Gold Coast waterways for the benefit of everyone.

“As well as the day-to-day management of the Gold Coast waterways, I am committed to developing a long term strategy with suitable plans and priorities for the sustainable use of the waterways,” Mr Baildon said.

Mr Baildon will work with the Newman Government to finalise the board members and start providing advice on the operational roles and responsibilities.
