    Sunshine Coast Health Appointment

The long-awaited return of local control in the delivery of health services on the Sunshine Coast is a step closer following the appointment of local representatives to chair Hospital and Health Boards across the state.

The Minister for Health Lawrence Springborg today announced the appointment of chairs for 15 Hospital and Health Boards across Queensland.

The Governor in Council has agreed to the appointment of Professor Paul Thomas to Chair the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Board.

“The Newman Government is delivering on its election promise to restore local Health Boards to Queensland communities to oversee the management of health services,” Mr Springborg said.

“The people of the Sunshine Coast deserve to have greater trust and confidence in local health services and that’s what this government is on the path to delivering.

“The Board will put decision making back in the hands of the community where it belongs, increasing local accountability for the delivery of health services.

“The new Chair will be accountable for the performance of the local Hospital and Health Board in purchasing and providing health services that meet the needs of their area.

“This government is committed to a health system that puts patients first, gives the local community a say in services, and values the knowledge and hard work of skilled frontline staff.

Minister Springborg said Professor Thomas brings extensive experience to the role of Chair of the local Hospital and Health Board.

“Paul has substantial board experience and well established networks in the Sunshine Coast region,” he said.

“He was successful in establishing the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) and is the University’s founding Vice-Chancellor and President.

“In 2007 Paul was awarded an Order of Australia medal for services to higher education and the establishment of the USC.

“Paul has an important role to play in transforming the way local health services are governed and I congratulate him on the appointment.”

The recruitment of board members will be finalised in coming weeks.
