Premier welcomes Caval Ridge mine announcement

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has welcomed BHP Billiton’s announcement today it would move ahead with the Caval Ridge mine project and an expansion of the Peak Downs mine in the northern Bowen Basin.

This step forward comes following conditional approval from the Coordinator-General in August 2010, after 18 months of rigorous environmental impact assessment.

These are the most detailed and prescriptive set of restrictions for a coal mine in Queensland to date.

The conditions set clear requirements and procedures with respect to air quality monitoring, dust and water management, community consultation and the mitigation of potential social impacts of the mine, as well as requirements for extensive vegetation offsets and infrastructure agreements on road impacts, particularly the Peak Downs Highway.

What’s more, the Government recently established its Major Housing Policy – which requires BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance to build 400 new homes across the Bowen Basin as part of the Caval Ridge assessment process.

The Premier said the $4.2 billion projects would add 8 million tonnes of metallurgical coal to Queensland’s export market by 2014.

“This announcement by BHP Billiton today is another boost for Queensland jobs and the Queensland economy,” Ms Bligh said.

“It will create around 1200 construction jobs and 495 ongoing operational jobs for the next 30 years.

“That’s a jobs and investment guarantee for the next 30 years.

The Premier said business investment in Queensland was going from strength to strength.

“Yesterday, Deloitte’s Access Economics Investment Monitor announced Queensland had surged to an historic high with more than $100 billion worth of projects committed or under construction.

“Queensland’s economy is booming and BHP Billiton’s announcement today is further confirmation that when it comes to investment, Queensland is where business wants to be.”
