Fallen soldiers to be honoured in Queensland Parliament

Premier Anna Bligh on behalf of the Queensland Government tonight supported a parliamentary move to ensure that fallen soldiers are properly honoured.

“It’s a fitting mark of respect for our fallen heroes that State Parliament should acknowledge their sacrifice with a minute’s silence,” Ms Bligh said.

    “Our diggers deserve this honour.

“Having the Standing Orders amended will enshrine this mark of respect into the rules of Parliament.

“On the first sitting day after a member of the Australian military is killed on active overseas duty the House will observe a minute’s silence.

“This is especially relevant given that our soldiers are on active duty in Afghanistan,” Ms Bligh said.

The Queensland Parliament tonight voted to have the necessary changes drafted to the Standing Orders.

To date 29 soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan.
