$500,000 funding boost for children with a disability

Premier and Minister for Reconstruction Anna Bligh said a $500,000 funding boost would help ensure community kindergartens had the staff and resources required to deliver quality early childhood education programs to children with a disability.

“Today I announced an additional $500,000 to help support community kindergartens in delivering services for children with a disability,” Ms Bligh said.

“Kindergarten is a foundation building block of a world class education and I want that for every Queensland child.

“The funding will help community kindergartens fund the teacher aides that are an important part of teaching students with a disability.

“So far we have received applications on behalf of almost 240 children in community kindergartens across Queensland.

“Funding is allocated to individual students based on their level of need.”

Education Minister and Member for Greenslopes Cameron Dick said the funding was important to ensuring all Queensland children had access to a flying start.

“The days of a disability being a disadvantage to accessing first class education are ending and this funding will give more children the chance to fulfill their potential,” Mr Dick said.

“We are committed to providing Queensland children with universal access to kindergarten and this funding boost is helping us deliver on that commitment.

“This means better education outcomes, better learning outcomes and more assistance with personal development.

“Participation in early childhood education is the foundation for success in learning and life.”

The funding forms part of the $8.3 million Non School Organisations program which provides funding to non government, not-for-profit, non school and incorporated organisations to improve the educational opportunities, learning outcomes and personal development of children with a disability.
