Major Projects Office open for business

Developers of major projects in Queensland will be able to access streamlined approval processes through the State Government’s Major Project Office which opens for business today.

Deputy Premier Paul Lucas, who announced in Parliament that applications to the office would be accepted from today, said the initiative would help make sure major projects could get off the ground to provide important infrastructure for Queensland and jobs for the State.

“This is one of the key initiatives that came as a direct result of ideas raised during the Queensland Building Revival Forum,” Mr Lucas said.

“What this means is developers of major projects that meet set criteria will be able to download application forms at

“The MPO will take a commonsense approach and exercise flexibility when considering rural and regional projects and will be speaking with Councils and the LGAQ in coming weeks to ensure local governments fully understand this very important initiative.

“The MPO has been funded with $1.8 million this financial year and will work within the Sustainable Planning Act 2009 to facilitate and coordinate the planning and approval processes across government, while providing consistency.

“It will deal with major projects that do not qualify for oversight by the Coordinator-General or the Urban Land Development Authority.

“We know this is what industry wants and we are pleased to be delivering it because support for development means support for jobs. Already, our announcement that we would establish the office received praise from key industry players like Kathy MacDermott from the Property Council of Australia and Angus Nardi from the Shopping Centre Council.

“I encourage developers who believe their projects may qualify to get online, submit their plans and keep Queensland moving.”
