Millmerran coal mine recognised in Premier’s ClimateSmart Sustainability Awards

A Millmerran coal mine leading the way in eco-efficient technologies has won a top environmental award at the Premier’s ClimateSmart Sustainability Awards.

Premier and Minister for Reconstruction Anna Bligh and Minister for Environment and Resource Management Kate Jones congratulated Downer EDI Mining which was presented with the Corporate ClimateSmart Award at a ceremony tonight.

“Downer’s Commodore Mine which delivers around 3.6 million tonnes of raw coal each year to the Millmerran Power Station has led the way in renewable fuel use,” Ms Bligh said.

“It was one of the first open cut coal mines in the world to completely switch its total fuel use to biodiesel and has also pioneered a program to independently verify fugitive methane emissions.

“Commodore Mine has significantly improved the accuracy and transparency of emissions reporting, both for itself and the broader industry.

“After trialling its unique and innovative Energy and Emissions Measure at Commodore, Downer EDI Mining has now implemented the system at all of its operations.”

Ms Jones said in addition to fuel conservation, Commodore Mine has also introduced measures to achieve self-sufficient water usage and recycle ash from the power station to bring mined areas back to near-natural landform.

“Through eco-efficiency improvements at Commodore, Downer EDI Mining has demonstrated the advantages of a sustainable approach for mine operators, associated businesses and the mining industry as a whole,” she said.

Ms Jones congratulated all the finalists, who faced tough competition with 154 nominations across 11 categories from community groups, small and large business and industry.

“Each of the shortlisted projects supports the State Government’s Q2 ambitions for a greener, stronger and smarter Queensland,” Ms Jones said.

“All finalists displayed an exceptionally high level of innovation to develop a range of products and practices that reduce the use of water and energy and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

“They also demonstrated that being sustainable can be rewarding on many different levels, supporting our Government’s Q2 aims of promoting a stronger, smarter and greener Queensland.

“Downer EDI Mining is a shining example to other Queenslanders of the rewarding results of becoming sustainable.”

The Premier’s ClimateSmart Sustainability Awards program is the Queensland Government’s highest recognition of community and business leadership in sustainability, innovation and eco-efficiency.

Ms Jones also thanked this year’s sponsors, in particular Australian Country Choice and Coles, Bendigo Bank, Carlton United Breweries, Ecofund Queensland, Energex, Leighton Contractors, Office of Clean Energy, QSEIF, Rheem Australia Pty Ltd, SEQ Catchments and Xstrata.
