Pioneering waste recycler wins Premiers ClimateSmart Sustainability Award

Trail blazing construction and demolition waste recycler Alex Fraser Queensland has won a major environmental award at the Premier’s ClimateSmart Sustainability Awards.

Minister for Environment and Resource Management Kate Jones congratulated Alex Fraser Queensland which was presented with the Minister’s Award for ClimateSmart Leadership at a ceremony in Brisbane attended by more than 500 people.

The award was for a study with Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads aimed at broadening the range of projects which can use recycled building materials.

“Alex Fraser Queensland has led the way in demonstrating the enormous environmental and economic benefits of recycling concrete and aggregates,” Ms Jones said.

“This company has been developing the recycled roadbase market here in Queensland since 1995.

“Thanks to its work with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Alex Fraser has now proved that recycled materials can be used in a broader range of projects than ever before, including residential and industrial subdivisions as well as major road infrastructure.

“Their recycled materials have been used on Airportlink projects as well as the Fitzgibbon Chase Residential Community UDLA.

“They are also being considered for residential estates and industrial developments for Stockland and Australand, and other major builders and developers are evaluating recycled material for many and various projects.”

Ms Jones congratulated all the finalists, who faced tough competition with 154 nominations across 11 categories from community groups, small and large business and industry.

“All finalists displayed an exceptionally high level of innovation to develop a range of products and practices that reduce the use of water and energy and cut greenhouse gas emissions,” Ms Jones said.

“They also demonstrated that being ClimateSmart and sustainable can be rewarding on many different levels, supporting our Government’s Q2 aims of promoting a stronger, smarter and greener Queensland.

“The Bligh Government is committed to reducing waste that goes into landfill and to building Queensland’s recycling industry.

“The work of Alex Fraser Queensland complements our government’s goals and waste reforms that are all about stopping the reusable materials from going into dump sites.

“The Alex Fraser Queensland Group, like all finalists, is a shining example to us all about the rewarding results of becoming sustainable.

“It’s easy to see why Alex Fraser is considered a leader in demonstrating the benefits of recycling concrete and aggregates since 1995 and I congratulate them on their well deserved win.”

The Premier’s ClimateSmart Sustainability Awards program is the Queensland Government’s highest recognition of community and business leadership in sustainability, innovation and eco-efficiency.

Ms Jones also thanked this year’s sponsors, in particular Australian Country Choice and Coles, Bendigo Bank, Carlton United Breweries, Ecofund Queensland, Energex, Leighton Contractors, Office of Clean Energy, QSEIF, Rheem Australia Pty Ltd, SEQ Catchments and Xstrata.
