New judge appointed to District Court

Deputy Premier and Attorney-General Paul Lucas today announced the appointment of a new judge to the District Court of Queensland.

Mr Lucas congratulated Mr Gary Long, a barrister for almost 20 years and senior counsel for the past four and a half years on his appointment as 37th District Court judge.

“Mr Long’s position as a District Court judge becomes effective today following a swearing in ceremony,” Mr Lucas said.

“I congratulate Mr Long on his appointment to this significant role in the Queensland justice system and I’m confident he will serve the people of Queensland and the justice system well.

“Mr Long was admitted as a barrister in 1981 and was appointed as Senior Counsel in 2006. He has worked extensively in criminal law, worker’s compensation, administrative law and disciplinary matters.”

Mr Lucas said Mr Long was appointed as the inaugural Senior Member of Misconduct Tribunals in 1998 and appointed as Parliamentary Crime and Misconduct Commissioner in late 2009.

“Mr Long has also been the Queensland Bar Association’s representative on the Access to Justice Committee of the Law Council of Australia since November 1998.

“Mr Long brings a depth of knowledge and a wealth of experience to this important role.”
