Queensland construction workers bust a gut for health

Queensland construction workers are set to become the biggest losers after taking up the 'Bussta Gut' health and weight loss challenge.

Industrial Relations Minister Cameron Dick and Building Industry Minister Simon Finn launched the 'Bussta Gut Challenge’ today at the site of the new $600 million Supreme and District Courts complex in Brisbane.

"The 'Bussta Gut Challenge' will provide tailored and personalised advice to help workers lose weight, get active and develop healthier habits," Mr Dick said.

"Under the eight-month challenge, workers will get an initial assessment of their body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and also their lifestyle risk factors.

"That assessment is then used to develop a road map to a healthier life.

"As well as improving physical health, the wellbeing challenge will also help workers improve their emotional outlook. This might sound like touchy-feely stuff to your average builder but it is about living a longer, happier life.”

Mr Finn said the State Government was committed to tackling the growing obesity problem among Queensland construction workers.

"A recent lifestyle survey of 1,000 local construction workers made for pretty grim reading," he said.

"It revealed more than two-thirds of construction workers are overweight or obese, with over one third having blood pressure considered 'at risk'.

"The survey also showed 34 per cent of Queensland construction workers are current smokers and 64 per cent are consuming a 'risky' level of alcohol.

"These are alarming statistics, but the good news is it's not too late for building and construction workers to turn their health around.

"The 'Bussta Gut Challenge’ is all about helping workers develop healthier habits and lifestyles.

"So far it's reached over 100 construction workers from five worksites across Queensland, and hopefully there are a whole lot more who will sign up."

Mr Finn said the ‘Bussta Gut Challenge’ was an initiative of the Builders' Labourers Federation, Building Unions Superannuation Scheme Queensland and the State Government.
