Big business adds $2 million to flood appeal

Mining company Xstrata and supermarket giant Coles are the latest companies to show their support for Queenslanders.

The companies have together donated $2 million to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal taking the total raised in just 24 hours to $4.35 million.

Premier Anna Bligh today thanked Xstrata and Coles for $1 million donations each, saying their support confirmed the companies’ commitment to Queensland.

Visiting the mining community of Emerald today, Premier Bligh said Xstrata’s donation recognised the impact these floods will have on mining communities across Queensland.

Ms Bligh also thanked supermarket giant Coles for their $1 million donation.

“Coles has businesses right across Queensland and many of their customers, as well as employees will have been affected by flooding.

"Having seen the Coles supermarket in Emerald under water today, their significant contribution is particularly welcome.”

Ms Bligh said she was overwhelmed by businesses quick to show their support for Queenslanders doing it tough.

The Premier also acknowledged the welcome donations from Suncorp and BOQ yesterday and Queensland Gas Ltd, BHP and Anglo American today.

This is in addition to the Queensland Government’s $1 million donation and $1 million from the Commonwealth Government.

"There is no doubt that we are looking at a multi-billion dollar price tag here given the damage to roads, rail and other vital infrastructure alone.

“But these floods are an unprecedented event and we won’t know the true extent of the damage until the flood waters recede,” Ms Bligh said.

“But what we do know is many, many Queenslanders are going to need as much help as they can get from both governments and the community.

"The support we have seen for the Disaster Relief Appeal in just the past 24 hours has been fantastic.”
