    Premier launches Disaster Relief Appeal

Premier Anna Bligh has today launched an appeal to help those affected by wide-spread devastating flooding across Queensland.

The Queensland Government launched the appeal with a $1 million contribution.

The announcement follows the Premier's visit to Bundaberg and Rockhampton where a further 5 areas were formally declared disaster situations, bringing the total to 8 across Queensland.

“Hundreds of families across Queensland have been hard hit by the worst flooding in decades – in some cases, the worst on record.”

"It is impossible not to feel for those Queensland families who have lost everything in these floods, particularly so close to Christmas.

"The resilience of these Queensland communities is certainly on display but the worst is far from over and they need our help.

“This is an unprecedented situation in Queensland and we ask Australians to give what they can.

“Australians have always rallied to help those in need and I am certain we will rise to the challenge once again.”

“No donation, whether it be $2 or $20, is too small. Every dollar will be directed toward helping Queenslanders in need.

“Many parts of Queensland have been very hard hit and this is an opportunity to show our support.

The Bank of Queensland (BoQ) has been quick to show its support with a $250,000 donation to the appeal.

Suncorp have also already donated $100,000 to the appeal.

Donations can be made in person at any Queensland branch of the Bank of Queensland (BoQ), Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, ANZ, NAB or Suncorp.

Cheques can be made out to the Premiers’ Disaster Relief Appeal.

Donors can contact the Queensland Government 24 hours a day on freecall 1800 219 028 with their credit card details.

Donations can also be made on the Queensland Government website, www.qld.gov.au/floods

“We are all saddened by the devastation, suffering and hardship caused by this unprecedented flooding across such wide areas of Queensland. The appeal is a tangible way of giving much-needed assistance,” Ms Bligh said. “Any assistance we can provide is important.”

The Australian Red Cross has agreed to manage the distribution of the donated funds on behalf of the Queensland Government.

All donations of $2.00 or more to the appeal will be tax deductable.
