Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements extended

The Bligh Government today extended joint State and Federal Government disaster relief and recovery arrangements to a further three local government areas in Queensland’s Far North.

Inspecting flood damage in Central Queensland today, Acting Premier Paul Lucas said the Cassowary Coast, Cairns and Tablelands Regional Councils could now access assistance to cover the cost of counter disaster operations.

?“The impacts of recent heavy rainfall are already being felt in these areas and the predicted continued rainfall will take an even bigger toll,” Mr Lucas said.

?“A total of 31 Councils across the State are now covered under NDRRA.

“The current statewide damage estimate now stands at above $609 million, and with more rain predicted this figure is set to increase in coming days.

??“Covered Councils are able to apply for funding from the State and Federal Governments to cover the cost of repairs as well as any costs associated with managing counter disaster operations.”

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts, who also visited Central Queensland, said primary producers in the Banana Shire and Central Highlands were also able to seek NDRRA assistance.

“Recent rain and floods have taken their toll on our primary producers, with much of the damage to crops yet to be assessed,” Mr Roberts said.

“Concessional loans and freight subsidies are being offered to those primary producers who have been hit hard – at this stage that includes those in the Banana Shire and Central Highlands regions.

“NDRRA funding has also already been activated for the Banana, Barcaldine, Balonne, Barcoo, Blackall-Tambo, Bulloo, Bundaberg, Central Highlands, Fraser Coast, Gladstone, Gold Coast, Isaac, Lockyer Valley, Longreach, Mackay, Maranoa, Murweh, Paroo, Quilpie, Rockhampton, North Burnett, Moreton Bay, Somerset, Sunshine Coast, Scenic Rim, Goondiwindi, South Burnett, and Western Downs Regional Councils.”
