Mount Isa solicitor appointed as magistrate

A prominent north-west Queensland lawyer has been appointed as Mount Isa’s new magistrate.

Attorney-General Cameron Dick said local solicitor Rod Madsen has been appointed as a magistrate today by Executive Council.

The appointment has been welcomed by Member for Mount Isa Betty Kiernan.

“Rod Madsen has run his own legal practice in Mount Isa for the past decade so it is pleasing that a local has been appointed as our new magistrate,” Mrs Kiernan said.

“Rod’s legal background and local knowledge mean that he will be well suited to the job.”

Mr Dick said Mr Madsen was admitted as a solicitor of Supreme Court of Queensland in 1990 and had since enjoyed a distinguished legal career.

“Mr Madsen has experience in the broad range of matters that come before Magistrates Courts such as criminal proceedings, domestic violence hearings, coroner’s inquests, divided fence disputes and civil matters,” Mr Dick said.

“He has also appeared extensively in the higher courts and has specialised in family law and child protection matters.

“Mr Madsen is also heavily involved in the community and is a past president of the Mount Isa Cricket Association, the Mount Isa Rotary Club and the Happy Valley Kindergarten.”

Mr Madsen has been appointed to the Townsville Magistrates Court for nine months for training and professional development, and then will return to Mount Isa for a minimum of two years.
