Hard work of Mackay Murri Court volunteers acknowledged

Attorney-General Cameron Dick has joined Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt in Mackay to acknowledge the hard work of Murri Court volunteers.

Mr Dick and Ms Jarratt presented ceremonial sashes to the local Murri Court elders and respected persons as part of his visit to Mackay today.

“Murri Courts are a key part of the State Government’s Indigenous Justice Strategy and it is impossible to put a value on the contribution made by those involved,” Mr Dick he said.

“Murri Courts would not be possible without the support of magistrates, the local community justice group, the elders and other respected members of the Indigenous community who generously donate their time.

“The sashes that were presented today represent a ‘badge of office’ for elders and respected persons who work so hard to serve their community.” (Full list of recipients below)

Ms Jarratt praised the contribution of local elders and respected persons.

“Elders and respected persons are the cornerstone of the local Murri Court, serving as volunteers and providing magistrates with culturally appropriate advice in dealing with defendants, victims and witnesses,” Ms Jarratt said.

“Their willingness to volunteer their time, skills and energies to help with the operation of the Murri Court in Mackay is highly commendable and appreciated,” Ms Jarratt said.

“The Murri Court also receives support from many government agencies and community stakeholders, including members of the local legal profession.

“It is the work of these volunteers which makes the Murri Court a reality.”

Mr Dick was in Mackay today for several events related to his portfolio.

He also presented long-service certificates to Justices of the Peace and attended a Planning for Life forum at Glenella.
