Three significant appointments made within justice portfolio

Attorney-General Cameron Dick has announced three significant appointments within the justice portfolio.

Mr Dick said John Briton had been reappointed as the Legal Services Commissioner, Rachel Hunter had been appointed as the new chair for Legal Aid Queensland, and Dan Toombs had been reappointed as a Legal Aid Queensland board member.

“John Briton has headed the Legal Services Commission since 2004, and has performed an outstanding job,” Mr Dick said.

“He has shown great leadership in his role of protecting the rights of legal consumers and promoting high standards of conduct in the delivery of legal services.

“He has overseen the development and implementation of several initiatives including the highly successful symposium series, which brings together legal practitioners, legal academics and regulators to discuss issues within the legal community.

“In addition to this, Mr Briton played a vital role in the implementation of ‘LP Portal’, a comprehensive online library of regulatory information for members of the legal profession.

“I am very pleased that he has been reappointed by the Governor-in-Council until 2014.”

Mr Dick said Mrs Hunter, chair of Q-COMP and a former director-general in the Queensland public service, would take over from Margaret O’Donnell as the chair of Legal Aid.

“Mrs Hunter brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role, having worked in the Queensland public sector for more than 30 years,” he said.

“As a result of her background as a former director-general of the Department of Justice and Attorney-General, Mrs Hunter is familiar with the important role played by Legal Aid Queensland in our justice system.

Mr Dick said Dan Toombs, who has been a board member of Legal Aid since 2007, had been reappointed for a further three years.

“I congratulate everyone on their appointments and look forward to continue working with them in providing efficient justice services to all Queenslanders.”
