    Attorney-General to appeal Byrnes sentence

Statement below can be attributed to Attorney-General Cameron Dick:

Today I have lodged an appeal in the Court of Appeal in Brisbane against the sentence imposed on Gerard Vincent Byrnes for the offences of rape, maintaining an unlawful sexual relationship, and indecent treatment of a child under the age of 16.

The grounds of this appeal are that this sentence fails to reflect the gravity of the offence, that the sentence fails to act as a sufficient deterrence, and that the sentencing judge gave too much weight to factors of mitigation.

The court will set the date for the appeal.

I will not be making any further comment as the matter is now before the courts.
