Couples say ‘I do’ for their perfect 10

Queenslanders’ passion for getting married on memorable dates has continued this year.

Attorney-General Cameron Dick said the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages had received significant interest from couples who want to exchange vows on the tenth day of the tenth month in the year 2010.

“Eighteen couples have booked weddings at the registry's Brisbane marriage room on Sunday, the 10th of October 2010, prompting the registry to extend its opening hours,” Mr Dick said.

“One couple has even chosen to get married at 10:10am on 10/10/10, which should make it very easy for them to remember their anniversary.

“They chose the date as the number 10 traditionally means ‘complete’ and ‘perfect’ in the Chinese community.”

Mr Dick said last year, 27 couples were married at the Brisbane registry on 09/09/09, and in the previous year, 32 couples wed on 08/08/08.

“It was also busy in 2007, with 14 weddings at the Brisbane registry and a total of 581 taking place across the state on 07/07/07,” Mr Dick said.

“Thirteen couples also have their eyes set on marrying on Wednesday 20/10/2010, which is more weddings than we usually conduct on a weekday.

“I have no doubt that the reasons for getting married on these particular dates are as varied as the couples themselves.”

Mr Dick said the civil ceremonies had increased in popularity over the years, and the number of registry weddings in Brisbane had hit record highs in recent times.

“The Brisbane marriage room has proved extremely popular since it relocated to the heritage listed Old Government Printery building at 110 George Street, near the Botanic Gardens, five years ago.

“I hope that every couple getting married on 10 October enjoys a healthy and happy life together.”
