    Attorney-General to appeal Thomason sentence

Statement below can be attributed to Attorney-General Cameron Dick:

Today I have lodged an appeal in the Court of Appeal in Brisbane against the sentence imposed on Floyd Samson Henare Thomason for grievous bodily harm.

The grounds of this appeal are that this sentence fails to reflect the gravity of the offence, that the sentence fails to act as a sufficient deterrence, and that the sentencing judge gave too much weight to factors of mitigation.

The court will set the date for the appeal.

I will not be making any further comment as the matter is now before the courts.

[Note: Floyd Samson Henare Thomason was sentenced in the District Court on 9 September 2010 to 4.5 years’ imprisonment, with parole eligibility after 14.5 months, for stabbing a man in Townsville on 7 November 2009.]
