    Queensland Children’s Hospital surges forward

The Deputy Premier and Minister for Health today announced the delivery of the Queensland Children’s Hospital was another step closer.

Mr Lucas announced today that the State Government had entered into an agreement with Telstra to vacate the South Brisbane telephone exchange.

The Telstra South Brisbane exchange is currently located on the corner of the site for the new Children’s Hospital.

“Federal legislation prevents the State Government from resuming this telecommunications asset under these circumstances,” Mr Lucas said.

“I am pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached for Telstra to vacate the site.

“But obviously as a matter of compensation the State is obliged to meet the cost of replacement of the old copper exchange.

“Bearing in mind the Federal Government’s National Broadband policy and developments in technology, Telstra will replace it with modern fibre optics, which will not only benefit the hospital but also the surrounding area the current exchange serviced.”

The agreement, on commercial terms, commits the State to pay $77 million to Telstra to secure their vacation of the exchange. This amount includes a $28 million loan that will be repaid to the State in full.

The loan is to pay for the replacement cabling to residences - an amount which Telstra is likely to recoup in the sale of any assets to the NBN Co.

Telstra has also given a commitment that any additional benefit they receive when they sell the cable network to NBN Co. would be passed onto the State.

“This paves the way for the delivery on time of the 21st Century, highly specialised, Queensland Children’s Hospital and also paves the way for Telstra’s future telecommunications infrastructure,” Mr Lucas said.

“This is a good deal for Queensland’s Children and a good deal for South Brisbane.”

    Ends.
