Insulation installers targeted in statewide safety blitz

Queensland Government electrical safety inspectors have audited more than 370 insulation installers as part of a statewide safety blitz, Industrial Relations Minister Cameron Dick announced today.

Mr Dick said inspectors from the Electrical Safety Office (ESO) and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland were well on track to achieve their target of auditing 500 companies by the end of this month.

“Inspectors began their blitz of insulation installers in late November following the deaths of three workers within the industry across the nation, including two in Queensland,” Mr Dick said.

“The inspectors have been checking that insulation installers are meeting their safety obligations as well as complying with new rules that came into effect from 1 November last year to improve worker and householder safety.

“I’m encouraged that inspectors have found that insulation installers have knowledge of the key safety issues and are doing the right thing by not using metal fixings or installing insulation over downlights,” Mr Dick said.

“But there is still room for improvement in the industry as inspectors have found installers need to improve their on-site risk assessments and record keeping.

“Inspectors have been issuing notices requiring installers to make these improvements.”

Mr Dick said the Queensland Government is determined to take all measures necessary to avert any further tragic incidents in this industry.

He said the ESO and WHSQ are conducting comprehensive investigations into the fatalities of insulation installers aged 25 and 16 years in separate incidents on 14 October in Brisbane and 18 November in Stanwell in Central Queensland.

“Two deaths only a few weeks apart highlighted, in the most tragic circumstances, the electrical and other workplace safety risks associated with installing ceiling insulation.

“Such tragedies can be avoided if installers take basic safety precautions on every job.
