Bridge naming ceremony honours pioneering family

The former Twin Cities Bridge over the Ross River was officially celebrated as the Vickers Bridge at a ceremony held today to honour one of Townsville’s founding families.

Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said at today’s event that the Vickers family had a long history of involvement in Townsville, stretching back to 1862.

“Jack and Ethel Vickers were pioneers in the area, settling the land from Hervey Range Road to Gollogoly Lane and out to the Bohle River,” Mr Wallace said.

“The Vickers also established the Rossbank dairy in 1926 and showed great charity to the Townsville community, at times supplying milk to poor families without seeking payment.

“The Vickers Bridge will be a testament to the pioneering and community spirit of the family and recognise the importance they played in establishing the area.

“It is an honour to be here today to celebrate the renaming of the bridge with members of the Vickers family.”

Mr Wallace said the community has demonstrated a strong support for the bridge to be renamed after the Vickers family since 2003.

“The new name for the bridge was chosen following a lengthy consultation period and strong support from the local community,” he said.

“I would particularly like to thank 4TO Breakfast presenter Steve Price, who has campaigned strongly to name the bridge after the Vickers family.

“I’m pleased Steve was able to be with us today at the ceremony to officially re-name the bridge.

“As we look toward a prosperous future for Townsville, it is always important to keep an eye on the past and recognise those who have helped to make this great city the place it is today.

“I thank everyone who contacted the Department of Transport and Main Roads to have the bridge re-named to honour one of Townsville’s most important families.”

Mr Wallace presented the Vickers family with a framed certificate of commemoration to mark the new name of the bridge.
