$64.94 million for disaster repairs in Western Queensland

Local Government Minister Desley Boyle has today announced $64.94 million in disaster relief funding for Western Queensland to help cover the costs of repairs caused by flooding earlier this year.

Ms Boyle said the monsoonal rain and flooding in the wake of tropical cyclones Charlotte and Ellie during January and February caused significant damage to public assets in Boulia, Carpentaria, Diamantina, Etheridge, McKinlay, Croydon and Richmond Shires, as well as the Mount Isa City Council.

“The flooding that literally swept through the region took out extensive sections of the vital road networks which are the lifeblood for the communities and primary industries that rely on them to get around and get their livestock to market,” Ms Boyle said.

Member for Mount Isa Betty Kiernan said it was vital to repair the road networks as quickly as possible so life in the region could get back on track.

“In these situations it is extremely important to make sure the roads are restored to a safe and operational condition so locals can get on with their normal routines, get to the shops and access essential services,” Mrs Kiernan said.

“Not only that, but these roads are essential transport links to the Northern Territory, South Australian and New South Wales.

“With Western Queensland generating so much wealth for Queensland in the cattle, tourism and mining industries, it is important that roads were fixed so these industries could get back to work.

“After disasters like Cyclones Ellie and Charlotte, the Bligh Government is there to support local councils when times are tough. This significant funding support ensures local governments can get on with the job of providing services to ratepayers.”

Mrs Kiernan said it was important the State was working with councils and ensuring they did not bear the full brunt of costs related to natural disasters.

“Obviously, the huge cost of these repairs was a major imposition on local government finances,” she said.

The State and Commonwealth Governments have contributed $14,596,717 for Boulia, $2,580,273 million for Carpentaria, $9,476,166 for Diamantina, $11,332,706 million for Etheridge, $10,852,595 million for McKinlay, $7,978,190 for Croydon, $2,129,064 million for Richmond and $6,126,389 million for Mount Isa.

Since 2004-05, the State and Commonwealth governments have provided Boulia Shire Council with more than $32.3 million, Carpentaria Shire Council with more than $27.1 million, $12.9 million to Diamantina Shire Council, Etheridge Shire Council with more than $19.35 million, McKinlay Shire Council with more than $20.83 million, Croydon Shire Council with more than $16.1 million and Richmond Shire Council with more than $5.16 and Mount Isa City Council with more than $11.62 million under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements program.
