Q150 celebrations - Susan River bridge naming

Fraser Coast community members have a unique opportunity to celebrate Queensland’s 150th birthday by suggesting a name for a local bridge that has remained nameless for 32 years.

Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said the bridge naming project was a great chance for the community to make their mark on local history.

“The Susan River bridge was built in 1977 and carries at least 10,000 vehicles per day between the Maryborough and Hervey Bay communities,” Mr Wallace said.

“Local residents, heavy vehicle operators and tourists will notice the new sign, so it is important to create a name which sparks great interest in our local communities.

“Names which honour an individual or group vital to our community's success, pioneers, sports achievers, civic leaders, successful performers or artists who have a link to the local area would be considered.

“Suggested names do not have to relate to people; they can be Indigenous, regional animal or plant species or historical events.

“A community based panel will then be established to select one name from submissions received.”

Q150 bridge naming festivities will highlight the integral role that roads and bridges played in building the state's prosperity and connecting Queenslanders.

"The anniversary celebrations will run the entire year and express the vision – reflect on our past, imagine our future,” Mr Wallace said.

“The celebrations are shaped around four themes – history, people, places and future.

“Bridges and their names are a legacy for future generations, so send in your suggestion now to be a part of Queensland's history making.”

Submissions close 15 May. Suggested bridge names should be sent to q150bridges@mainroads.qld.gov.au with ‘Fraser Coast Bridge’ in the subject line; faxed to 4152 3878; or posted to Q150 Bridge Naming Project/Fraser Coast Bridge, Locked Bag 486, Bundaberg, Qld, 4670.
