BLIGH GOVERNMENT WELCOMES COMMENT ON NAMING GREAT AUSTRALIAN PUMPKIN ROLL HILL

The Bligh Government is inviting residents of Goomeri to have their say on a plan to officially name Policemans Hill, the site of the Great Australian Pumpkin Roll.

Natural Resources and Water Minister Craig Wallace said the former Kilkivan Shire Council approached the his Department when it was discovered that the hill had never been officially listed in the Queensland place names register.

Minister Wallace said the feature had been known as Policemans Hill for over 70 years.

“The Hill is located in the township of Goomeri and signposted near the Goomeri Police Station and again at the eastern end of Hodge Street,” Mr Wallace said.

“It is a focal point of the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival, held on the last Sunday in May every year. The festival attracts around 12,000 people who converge on the town to celebrate all things pumpkin.”

The Department of Natural Resources and Water administers the Place Names Act 1994, which controls the official naming of localities, suburbs and geographical features within local government areas.

Place names plan QPN1070, showing the proposal, is available for public viewing at the Department of Natural Resources and Water, 27 O’Connell Street, Gympie; the Gympie Regional Council, Kilkivan Branch Office, 26 Bligh Street, Kilkivan; the Kilkivan and District Historical Society, 12 Bligh Street, Kilkivan; the Goomeri Library and at the Goomeri Post Office.
