NEW GRANTS FOR INDIGENOUS EDUCATION, TRAINING AND ART PROGRAMS

The Bligh Government is making $540,000 available over three years for arts, education and training projects which benefit Indigenous Queenslanders.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said schools, artists, training and art organisations could apply for Indigenous project funding under the new Lighthouse Grants project.

“Under the program, $180,000 is available for grants each year over three years to boost Indigenous programs and initiatives across training, education and the arts,” Mr Welford said.

“Grants of up to $25,000 are available to fund projects which demonstrate best practice in Indigenous program delivery.

“The program aims to create new approaches to education, training and the arts by stimulating collaboration across the three areas.”

Mr Welford said to be successful applications would need to involve a partnership with at least two of these areas.

“This will help establish partnerships and build strong Indigenous communities supported by learning and the arts,” he said.

“The Lighthouse Grants project supports our Government’s Smart State vision – of a state where knowledge, creativity and innovation drive economic growth to improve prosperity and quality of life for all Queenslanders.

“It will also help our aim to build positive relationships among diverse cultural groups and deliver quality programs to all Queenslanders, no matter where they live."

Mr Welford said the Lighthouse Grants project would be managed by the new Division of Indigenous Education, Training and the Arts within his portfolio.

“We have also launched the Indigenous Learning and Arts Strategic Plan 2008-2011 to improve education, training and employment outcomes for all Indigenous Queenslanders through strategic leadership, partnerships and alliances,” he said.

Applications for Lighthouse Grants close on 23 July 2008. Forms can be found at http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/indigenous/resources.html
