Regional students enjoy more LOTE opportunities

Regional students will have even more opportunity to study a language other than English (LOTE) with the introduction of new Regional Languages Education Plans in 2008.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the study of LOTE was important for Queensland in an increasingly global world.

“Queensland is culturally and economically dynamic with a wealth of influences from around the world,” Mr Welford said.

“Students across Queensland will now find it easier to learn a second language, particularly one which helps them embrace emerging cultural and local trends.

“Students in the Senior Phase of Schooling studying another language under a Regional Language Education Plan can now access a wider range of responsive and relevant language programs.

“The benefits for students who study another language range from intercultural learning to wider and more varied career options.

“Language study also promotes social cohesion and a sense of community.”

Mr Welford said that Education Queensland was developing a range of resources to support regional LOTE plans, including e-learning programs for Mandarin, Japanese, German and French.

“Six regions implemented the program this year, with four regions set to implement the program in 2009,” he said.

Students wishing to learn Mandarin, Japanese, German or French will now have access via the flexible alternative delivery.

The new model includes the following LOTE curriculum options:

    - Years 4–10 KLA (key learning area) LOTE—based on QCAR Essentials and Standards
    - Years 1–9 Intercultural Investigations (IcIs)—an inquiry-based program focusing on the interrelationship between culture and language
    - Years 11 and 12 KLA LOTE or VET electives.
