    Jericho-Windorah road project progressing well

Work on the new 336km all-weather road linking Jericho and Windorah in central western Queensland was progressing well with 47km already sealed, Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt has been told.

Mr Pitt received a project update from Main Roads staff in Barcaldine while visiting the area today as part of a two-day regional tour.

"The $51 million sealed link is set to replace the Jericho to Yaraka rail line, which closed in 2005," Mr Pitt said.

"Excellent progress on the 10-year project is being made, with 47km of the road already sealed and a further 22km of work currently underway.

"The project will provide an all-weather road along this route for the first time, which will improve community, tourism industry and grazing industry access to the region."

Mr Pitt also received updates on other projects being carried out in Barcaldine through the Queensland Government’s Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS).

"TIDS supports transport infrastructure projects in regional and rural communities throughout Queensland, and is funded by Main Roads and local councils,” he said.

Among the projects in progress under a joint $700,000 package funded through equal contributions from Main Roads and Barcaldine Shire Council are:
    • the upgrading of Home Creek Road and Narbethong Road to a six-metre sealed standard
    • the upgrading of the Barcaldine–Isisford Road
    • the upgrading of the Barcaldine–Aramac Road/Saltern Creek Road intersection.

"These are great examples of small projects delivering big results for the local community," Mr Pitt said.
