    PUBLIC OUTPOURING FOR IRWIN FAMILY

Premier Peter Beattie said tonight that he would wait to hear the Irwin family’s wishes before making any announcement on State recognition of Steve Irwin.

“There has been an extraordinary public reaction to Steve’s tragic death.

“Steve was a great ambassador for the State.

“Many Queenslanders have called and emailed me this afternoon expressing their desire that the Queensland Government acknowledge Steve’s enormous contribution to conservation and Australian tourism.

“I am anxious to do that, but I want to know Terri and the Irwin family’s view before making any public announcement.

“Clearly today is an horrific one for the family.

“I will make contact with Terri in the coming days to offer condolences and to ascertain her wishes.”

The Premier said a condolence book will be made available as soon as possible. Details will be provided in due course.
