    MACKAY MEATWORKS

Premier Rob Borbidge and Primary Industries Minister Trevor Perrett this morning met with representatives of Nippon Meats - owners of the Thomas Borthwick abattoir in Mackay.

The discussions followed meetings with union representatives during last weeks Country Cabinet meeting at Mackay.

The company had announced the closure of the meatworks and loss of employment for 450 workers.

Mr Borbidge said today the discussions had been productive.

"The Government is encouraging both the company and the unions to continue negotiations on a new enterprise bargaining agreement," the Premier said.

"The Government noted the companies commitment to significant capital investment in the plant following a successful outcome of the EBA negotiations.

"To encourage this outcome, and subject to mutually beneficial agreement between the company and the union, the Government is prepared to negotiate with management on an assistance package to facilitate new investment in the plant to bring it to world class standards."
