Beattie announces new study for Redcliffe bridge link

The State Government will undertake a new study to look at when a new bridge to Redcliffe might be built, Premier Peter Beattie said today.

"As part of that study we will address any impacts of duplicating the bridge on the surrounding road network," said Mr Beattie.

"As Transport Minister Steve Bredhauer has said recently we are also looking at ways to improve public transport for the area.

"The study I am announcing today will involve working closely with the Redcliffe City Council over the next six to nine months to develop a timetable for planning and construction of a second bridge.

"This study will get underway as soon as possible. As part of the work - we will also be talking to the community and various stakeholder groups.

"There is no doubt that the Houghton Highway Bridge will need to duplicated at some time in the future.

"Current advice to the Government - is the capacity of the current bridge is likely to be sufficient for projected growth in traffic for at least 15 years.

"That is the advice of Main Roads engineers - based on analysis to date.

"I understand however that Council have also done some work that has looked at the timing for a new bridge.

The Council's work was done by GHD.

"GHD arrived at a different conclusion - saying that a new bridge is required within the next eight years (2011) "Steve Bredhauer - and Member for Redcliffe Ray Hollis - will be meeting the Redcliffe City Council in the next few weeks to discuss GHD's findings.

"The obvious thing for us to do is to have a look at the work of the Redcliffe City Council and GHD," said Mr Beattie.
