The Honourable Cameron Dick

Assistant Minister for Treasury
Mrs Julieanne Gilbert

Mackay’s Queens Park was officially reopened today following the completion of $8.8 million in state-funded revitalisation works.

Assistant Queensland Treasurer and Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert said the project had provided an employment boost to the city, with more than 50 local jobs supported during redevelopment.

“These jobs have been especially valuable over the past few months as we’ve battled the economic fallout from COVID-19,” Ms Gilbert said.

“Nowhere in our state has been immune to the challenges we’re seeing in Queensland and around the world, so projects like this have proven crucial for businesses, workers and their families.

“Our government’s Unite and Recover economic plan has given an infrastructure investment guarantee of $51.8 billion over four years, so we’ll continue to build and employ to grow our economy.

“Tourism is also a central part of our recovery, and today’s ribbon-cutting ceremony at Queens Park is another reminder that Mackay is good to go for a visit or holiday.”

Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the project was fully funded by the Palaszczuk Government to help Mackay recover from 2017’s Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie.

“In total our government is investing $110 million to help Queensland communities get back on their feet following Cyclone Debbie,” Mr Dick said.

“Whether it’s a cyclone, flood or bushfire, or a health emergency such as COVID-19, building infrastructure is central to our economic fightback as we Unite and Recover for Queensland Jobs.

“Our government’s focus now is on continuing to deliver our COVID economic recovery plan to get Queenslanders working again.

“The revitalisation of Queens Park once again highlights the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to community infrastructure and delivering for our regions.”
